Silas (Silvanus)

Christian missionary who was imprisoned with Paul at Philippi.

Prison-like chamber at Philippi

Silas began accompanying Paul on Paul's second missionary journey.  He was selected after Paul quarreled with Barnabas, his previous coworker.  Silas and Paul traveled through Asia Minor into Macedonia where they were imprisoned for a night in Philippi.  The name of Silas (Silvanus) appears in a number of Paul's letters (1 Thess 1:1; 2 Thess 1:1).
