Paul was imprisoned at Philippi |
Philippi was a Greek
city situated along the Egnatian Way, which was a major east-west route
across Greece. Many Romans settled in Philippi in the first century.
Philippi was the
first European city in which Paul preached. Paul healed a slave girl who
was possessed with a spirit of divination and her owners had Paul and
Silas beaten and placed in prison. The
Philippian jailer became a Christian after an earthquake occurred during
the night, and Paul and Silas were released. The congregation at Philippi
supported Paul's ministry and remained close to Paul (Phil 1:1-11).
