This is a good question for all of us after a full season of Lent! We are entering into the time of Pentecost the beginning of a renewed journey of resurrection. Pentecost was a former Jewish festival which represented the fiftieth day after the beginning of Passover and was a celebration to offer the first fruits of the spring harvest. By the time of the New Testament period and continuing through today it became associated with celebrating God’s creation of His people, their religious history and the gift of the Torah.
For those Jewish followers of Christ, Pentecost had a new meaning. It was the time that God empowered them with the Holy Spirit and enabled the people of God to witness to who Jesus the Christ was from generation to generation.
So, where are you in your renewed journey with our Lord? Are you in a place you want to be? Are you feeling trapped? Or, are you on firm foundation and feel good about your journey? The season of Lent provided a time for us to reflect and renew and repair our foundation. The season of Pentecost should be a time for us to move out together to live and share our good news.
At Pentecost God provided the essence of who we are as His children. Throughout our journey when we are happy, we praise Him; through difficult times, we seek Him; during quiet moments, we worship Him; during our pain, we trust Him and always, we should work together to share Him.
It is in the sharing of our faith that we become stronger. Working together we receive what we need. Recently I received this inspiration. Unfortunately, I do not know who the author is. But it is an example, I think, of God’s expectation for us to be on the journey together not alone.
An anthropologist proposed a game to the kids in an African tribe. He put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the kids that whoever got there first would win the sweet fruits. When he told them to run they all took each others’ hands and ran together, then they sat together enjoying their treats. When he asked them why they had run like that when one of them could have had all the fruits for himself they said: UBUNTU, how can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?
God’s word for us today is UBUNTU; I am because we are!
Lord, Because of you we are. Help us to see your love through each other. Amen
